A Noninvasive System for Remote Monitoring of Left Ventricular Filling Pressures

Abstrakt

Heart failure (HF) remains a leading cause of hospitalization and a major driver of health care costs, significantly affecting patient prognosis despite considerable advancements in treatment.1 Telemonitoring has been proposed as a promising strategy to address these challenges by facilitating remote management and enabling the early detection of decompensations. However, the results from clinical trials have been inconsistent. In particular, telemonitoring approaches focused on symptoms, body weight, blood pressure, or heart rate have not demonstrated a clear prognostic benefit.2 On the other hand, left ventricular filling pressure (LVFP) monitoring has shown positive outcomes in randomized trials and meta-analyses. Nevertheless, current LVFP monitoring methods are invasive, costly, and associated with procedure-related complications, and they require long-term antithrombotic therapy.3,4 These limitations, combined with reimbursement complexities and the need for specialized provider training, have limited their widespread implementation.
